La stampante Canon imageCLASS MF8380Cdw utilizza la tecnologia di stampa laser a colori, che consente di ottenere stampe di alta qualità. La velocità di stampa dipende dalla modalità o dallo stato della stampante. Ad esempio, la modalità predefinita, ovvero la stampa duplex o fronte-retro, raggiunge dieci pagine al minuto (ppm). In modalità simplex o fronte, la velocità di stampa è di 21 ppm su carta comune.

La stampa di un documento in bianco e nero su carta in formato Letter richiede circa 15,3 secondi. La macchina può stampare pagine a colori su carta in formato Letter in 16,0 secondi o meno. La risoluzione di stampa media è di circa 600 x 600 punti per pollice (dpi). La risoluzione di stampa massima può raggiungere 2400 x 600 dpi, con la qualità di stampa più alta possibile.

La cartuccia toner compatibile è il modello Cartridge 118: consente di stampare 2900 pagine a colori con ciano, magenta e giallo. La stessa cartuccia può stampare fino a 3400 pagine di documenti in nero. Questa macchina può inoltre stampare fino a 40.000 pagine in un solo mese. Questi rendimenti si basano sugli standard di stampa ISO/IEC. Il linguaggio di stampa compatibile è inoltre UFR II LT, un linguaggio host-based di Canon.

Tra le altre caratteristiche generali da considerare c'è la compatibilità con un'ampia gamma di versioni dei sistemi operativi. Sono supportate, ad esempio, Windows 8, 7, Server 2008 (R1/R2), Vista, Server 2003 e Windows XP/2000. Oltre ai sistemi operativi Windows, il dispositivo è compatibile anche con Mac OS X 10.4.9 e le versioni successive di Mac OS. Le interfacce standard della macchina includono inoltre una porta USB 2.0 hi-speed, Ethernet 10/100 Base-T e IEEE 802.11 b/g/n.
